WSU-University Preparatory Academy Mathematics Program

The design of the Mathematics program combines aspects from both the college-level Emerging Scholars Program and the middle/high school-level WSU Math Corps. The model expands upon the curriculum developed by Professor Steve Kahn and builds upon the philosophy that rests at the foundation of all programs of the Mathematics Pipeline: (1) promoting high standards and high expectations and impressing upon students that hard work is a necessary part of success and (2) building a sense of community among the students involved, encouraging camaraderie both inside and outside of the classroom.

Former candidate for governor, Doug Ross, founded the charter schools that are Wayne's partner in the project, University Preparatory Academy (middle school). Mr. Ross serves as the superintendent of the schools.

The ultimate goal of the partnership is to produce exportable curricula and a program to produce teachers equipped to effectively teach in urban cities such as Detroit. The Mathematics Program will work to elevate Detroit students to perform at or above statewide average on standardized tests by developing a philosophy, a set of principals, and a programmatic structure that ensure student success in Mathematics and in education in general.
