Math Corps Past and Current Support A GIFT TO THE MATH CORPS CAN CHANGE THEIR LIVES... AND YOURS!!!
The Math Corps was founded in 1991 by faculty and students in Wayne State University’s Department of Mathematics as a volunteer, after-school tutoring program for middle school students in the Detroit Public Schools. In 1992, the Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with Detroit Public Schools (DPS), and with funding from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, established the Math Corps Summer Camp. The Detroit Edison Foundation provided funding for a 1993 camp. Since 1995, funding for the program has for the most part been provided by DPS, in some years using an "Urban Systemic Initiative" grant from the National Science Foundation. Since the beginning of the camp, Wayne State University has provided administrative support and faculty salaries for this program.
Our Plan for the Future We envision for the children of Detroit, a greatly expanded Math Corps serving as many children in the Detroit Public Schools as possible. Our near-term goal is to double the size of the existing Summer Camp and to expand the size of the Saturday program to accommodate all students who participate in the Summer Camp. By doing this, more college students will teach more high school students, and more high school students will teach middle school students. The result will be a self-perpetuating educational family, or "Corps," of inner city youths and teens who support one another in all aspects of life and who together achieve remarkable learning success. Self-esteem and confidence will be gained through successful achievement in Mathematics. Success among Math Corps students has become the rule, not the exception.
It is a vision that we invite you to share.
Our Funding Partnership for the Summer Camp We seek a minimum of $1.7 million from the private sector, to supplement the contributions by Wayne State University ($1,396,000 budgeted) and the Detroit Public Schools (proposed $699,000) over the next three years, to operate the expanded summer camp (540 students each year for three years).
The Math Corps Scholarship Fund The WSU Math Corps Scholarship Fund was established in June 2001 to recognize academic achievement, dedication to learning, and community involvement. The Fund supports the continued success of Math Corps Students by providing financial assistance for their education at Wayne State University.
